They say curiosity killed the cat. However, can you imagine living life without curiosity? Never wondering about how something works, far off places, and the fascinating mechanics of nature? What a bland existence to only be interested in what is clearly known! Being curious sparks imagination and creates opportunities to learn. Curiosity can also be a tool in conflict resolution.
When working in groups, it can be difficult to reach consensus. Different cultures, religious beliefs, income levels, education levels, gender, and even marital status can affect the way a person perceives an idea or solution. Bursting with an idea and having your bubble broken by an opposing view can be frustrating. This is a perfect time to get curious! Ask about the beliefs behind the person’s opinion or differing thoughts. Delve into what experiences have brought them to this conclusion. A simple “tell me more” can often open up a dialogue to help you both reach some common ground or at least a better understanding.
It is easy to become angry when you don’t see eye to eye. You may even feel extremely frustrated when you don’t comprehend why someone would object to your suggestion. Changing your mindset makes an impactful difference in the way you approach another point of view.
Curiosity wants to learn, to explore, and understand. Staunchly standing your ground and defending your thoughts, shuts down an opportunity for a more vast awareness of the world around us. Admittedly there are times we have to stand firm, but consider the richness and beneficial relationships that could be lost when sincere inquisitiveness is not utilized or embraced.
As for the cat, maybe he had just used up his nine lives. Stay calm and keep asking forthright questions when things don’t seem to line up with your thoughts, plans, and beliefs. Ignorance is the enemy, not a difference of opinion. As a matter of fact, I think it is more likely that ignorance killed the cat rather than curiosity.
