My Medicare Matters—Local Team Wins Recognition

The CareWell Services Calhoun and Barry County Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program team received awards at the first post-pandemic MMAP Statewide Recognition event, held July 20, 2022 in Lansing.

Awards for the number of hours served, going “Above and Beyond” to support beneficiaries and their communities, and Volunteer of the Year were presented. Local winners included Bruce Krueger and Peggy Thompson from the Barry County team, and Jolene English and Kate Turner from the Calhoun County team.

The event also included a presentation by Christopher T. Gould, Special Agent with the Office of the Inspector General United States Department of Health and Human Services Detroit Field Office. Gould discussed the ongoing need for community members to be alert for fraud involving the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Drug diversion scams, Durable Medical Equipment fraud, and false billing by home care agencies and providers continue to be the biggest dollar crimes against Medicaid and Medicare. Your MMAP team can help you review your statements and report suspected fraud and abuse.

The MMAP program consists of highly trained and certified volunteers from the community and partner agencies. Volunteers are always needed. If you enjoy learning complex information, are computer-savvy, and enjoy working one-on-one with elders, you may be a great fit. Volunteers may not be affiliated with insurance companies, brokers, or health care providers, must pass background checks and complete comprehensive training. Ongoing training and a minimum commitment of 60 hours annually are required.
