My Medicare Matters—Pay Attention to September Mail

Open Enrollment for Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans with Prescription Coverage runs October 15 to Dec 7 annually.

Each September, Medicare beneficiaries are mailed important information from their current drug plan, called an Annual Notice of Change Letter (ANOC). This letter tells you what costs will be changing with your plan. Even if your monthly cost does not change, or even if it reduces, the list of which medicines (formulary) are covered by your plan might change.

It’s very important to always open mail from your current insurance company, Social Security, or CMS (Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services).

Review your Medicare plan’s 2023 Evidence of Coverage (EOC) document mailed in early October – or made available electronically for download.  You have the right to call and request a printed out copy of their EOC Document and formulary if you prefer that to a download.

Be alert that even your current straight Part D drug plan companies might attempt to switch you into their brand of Medicare Advantage plans. Before changing into any “all in one” style plans (often seen on TV commercials) you need to make sure your doctors take that insurance, and that your meds are on the formulary.

Social Security might send mail telling you if your “Extra Help” with prescriptions is ending. Open Social Security mail!

“Extra Benefits” like dental and vision are often available to Calhoun seniors via Calhoun County Senior Millage. You don’t have to switch insurance just to get glasses!  Your MMAP counselors can help you sort it all out. Call 800-803-7174 to reach MMAP.
