Karen’s Decluttering Corner: Refresh Your Living Space

Summer is the perfect time to declutter and refresh your living space, however it is important to remember that organizing isn’t just about appearances, it is also about safety. According to the AARP HomeFit Guide, creating a secure and comfortable home involves thoughtful organization that promotes safety. By removing excess items and organizing smartly, we can make our daily routines much easier and prevent unexpected accidents.

Here are three simple tips inspired by the AARP HomeFit Guide to keep your home safe and functional:

Set a 10-Minute Timer: Decluttering can feel emotionally and physically overwhelming. Choose a small, two-foot by two-foot spot and spend exactly 10 minutes focused solely on sorting that area. When the timer goes off, stop!

Keep Everyday Items Accessible: In areas like the kitchen, store the pots, pans, and plates you use most frequently between your hip and shoulder height. This prevents dangerous bending, stooping, or reaching.

Secure the Floors: As you clear out the clutter, pay special attention to the floor. The AARP HomeFit Guide strongly recommends removing all throw rugs, or at the very least, securing them with double-sided carpet tape to prevent dangerous slips and trips.

Remember to keep your eyes on the prize. Focusing on these benefits will help keep you motivated and ensure your surroundings are safe for daily living. Download the AARP HomeFIT Guide for more decluttering tips. nces.
