Finding Joy When Holidays are Hard

The Christmas season is a time that is supposed to evoke joy, good cheer, and benevolence toward our fellow man. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. Some of us (make that many of us) are more likely to feel rushed, anxious, depressed and, yes, even angry!

Sad to say, that is understandable. The rush of the holiday season adds many tasks to our already busy schedules and time just seems to compress. But that is not how it should be. For those so afflicted, we urge you to stop, take a deep breath…and then another…and maybe a third. Now exhale…slowly. Let this moment be time for reflection as well as a search for proper perspective. Choose to avoid the stress of the season and take time to celebrate the many things that are right in this world.

And as we get older, the holidays might feel more lonely than before, right? Children may have moved away and started new family traditions, we may have lost people we love, or we may be less mobile than in previous years and not able to host the parties we once did. Losing my dad in 2020, has left a big hole for my sisters and I on Christmas Eve, which we always spent with him. We have the memories, and we have started new traditions of our own, all in remembrance of our dear old pops.

I wish you all a joyous end to 2022, no matter your circumstances. Look for the bright side and embrace your memories of years past. Begin new traditions. As the saying goes, if you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of snow.

If you’re looking for ways to add some joy into your holiday season, I invite you to join us at Heritage Commons for one of our December Crafting Classes.

On December 7 at 3:00pm we’ll be making Rosemary Wreaths. A rosemary wreath is a great way to keep your house smelling nice, perfect for Christmas time or any time of the year!

On December 14 at 3:00pm we’ll be making Ribbon Ornaments. Together we’ll create personalized ornaments from ribbon, letter tiles, bows, and accessories!

So we can plan for enough supplies for all participants, please preregister at the sign-up desk or by calling 269-558-6150. Free to members, $10 each for non-members.
