Get Durable Medical Equipment at CareWell Services

At one time or another in our lives, we may find the sudden need for assistive equipment, known as durable medical equipment. This may be a temporary need, such as a pair of crutches or a walking cane when recovering from a procedure or injury. Or, it may be a permanent need with declining mobility or other health issue as we age.

If you are a Medicare recipient, this type of equipment is called Durable Medical Equipment (DME). DME also includes nebulizers for breathing treatments, some diabetic supplies, CPAP units, and many other items. DME equipment is covered under Medicare Part B at 80% of cost.

In order for any DME to be covered by insurance, your primary care provider must write a prescription for the equipment and you must use an authorized DME provider. You can find a list of local approved providers at Medicare.gov. Do not say yes to anyone on the phone or online if they tell you they can supply any equipment covered by Medicare. If it’s not through your doctor, the claim will be denied, and you’ll be responsible for 100% of the cost.

Most Medicare Advantage plans do not cover the additional 20% cost of this equipment, and some pieces are very expensive. But we have great news! CareWell Services, your Area Agency on Aging, has recently opened a DME closet. We carry many items, including crutches, canes, walkers, and wheelchairs, all generously donated by community members when no longer needed. All items are checked for quality and sanitized and are available to you at no cost, whether needed for a few weeks or permanently. We also have some generous donors of disposable incontinence products, such as adult diapers, overnight booster liners, and bed pads.

CareWell Services is very pleased to be able to offer this cost-saving service. Whether you need a piece of equipment or would like to donate one, we invite you to call us at (269) 966-2450 and ask for a member of the DME team. Donations and pick-ups are by appointment only, to ensure the appropriate staff is available to assist you.
