Senior Health & Safety Day in Tekonsha

October is National Fire Prevention Month. The goal of Fire Prevention Month is to raise fire safety awareness, and help ensure everyone’s home and family is protected.

On October 6, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Tekonsha Fire Station and Calhoun County Senior Services will host a Senior Health and Safety Day. The Tekonsha Fire Station is located at 166 Spires Parkway in Tekonsha. The event is open to local older adults and caregivers to learn about programs and services available in Calhoun County, as well as information about fire prevention and safety.

Local senior service providers and emergency services personnel will have information tables about resources. There will also be demonstrations, giveaways, exercise classes, health screenings, presentations, coffee, donuts, and a free senior lunch. Some of the local fire trucks will also be on display.

Many months ago, a planning group came together to begin planning the fair, because older adults living in rural areas are less likely to be aware of programs and services available to them. Bringing service providers into local communities is a win-win for everyone.

Tekonsha Fire Chief Daryl Cummins offered the newly renovated Tekonsha Fire Station for the event. The planning committee includes staff from Calhoun County Senior Services, CareWell Services Southwest, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Forks Senior Center, Heritage Commons Senior Enrichment Center, Senior Health Partners, Senior Times and Tekonsha Fire Chief Cummins.
