MMAP is now SHIP: The name has changed, but the services stayed the same

The Michigan Medicare Assistance Program (MMAP) was established 37 years ago to educate Medicare recipients about how benefits work and help reduce costs. Services expanded over time to include Medicare Advantage plans, and further to help low-income beneficiaries with additional assistance and fraud prevention.

Shortly after MMAP was launched, the federal government put the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) in place to offer these same services nationwide. Since then, all MMAP and SHIP counselors have received the same training and certification, which is the same as SHIP counselors nationwide. This year, MMAP is adopting the national name, SHIP, with the same assistance and services as always.

Free benefits counseling for seniors is still available by calling (800) 803-7174. All that has changed is the name. Starting soon, there will be live operators to take your call and help you set your appointment, bringing you more personalized service than ever before!

As always, SHIP is a free, unbiased, Medicare counseling service provided to you via local, state and federal grants. SHIP is not affiliated with, nor does it receive compensation from any insurance companies
