My Medicare Matters-The Michigan Medigap Subsidy program is ending

The Michigan Medigap Subsidy program, which provided $120 million to help qualified Michigan seniors and persons with disabilities pay for Medigap policies, is ending.

If you’ve been receiving the subsidy, your bills have been lowered from between $25 and $75 each month. That is ending. Your December 2022 bill for your January 2023 premium will be the final bill with the subsidy. Your Medigap Supplemental insurance company will be mailing you a letter informing you of your new premium cost

If you want to learn more about the subsidy ending, go to MichiganMedigapSubsidy.com. Or call the Michigan Medigap Subsidy hotline at 1-866-824-9772 (TTY: 1-866-824-7002).

If you want to find out what choices you have when the subsidy ends, you can explore options for switching from one type of Medigap plan to another; or to a different insurance company, to reduce your monthly premium costs. You might be subject to medical underwriting if you apply at different companies. Consumers should not assume their pre-existing or chronic health conditions will prevent them from qualifying for a new plan—there are many choices available.

A MMAP counselor can provide you with the base prices (before medical underwriting) for all the Medigap companies, and for each type of plan, based on your age, zip code, and smoking status. Shop around! Medigaps have no annual enrollment period so you can change at any time of year. If you’d like information on types of Medigaps and base pricing, contact MMAP at 1-800-803-7174.
