Reduce clutter, save money, and make memories this holiday season

Holidays are a stressful time for a variety of reasons. One of the big stressors that many people face is the cost. Buying stuff for the parties, buying the costumes for the activities, and, of course, the biggest expense, buying all of the gifts to give.

Some use gifts as a language of love, presenting stuff to people to show they care. While the intentions are good, the excess of things can cause more problems. The gift item could just be clutter or something that the receiver will not use. Then this becomes an emotional dilemma. The receiver feels that they cannot get rid of this item for fear of upsetting the giver. Plus, buying gadgets for everyone in your life can add up quickly and create a hardship on your budget.

A wonderful way to keep the cost of gifts in check is to consider alternatives to gift items. Think of things to do rather than buying more stuff. Think of activities. Most people say that they would rather have time with their loved ones, and memories are the stories that I hear most from the kids.

They always say, “Remember when this happened?” Not, “Remember when I got that?”

Give the gift of time with an activity or event. Host a party for your friends and family with good food and fun music. Give “coupons” for a coffee date or shopping day. Even kids can create these “coupons” for family members by offering to do something for them, like rake leaves or wash the dishes. Schedule a movie night with special popcorn. Combine two into one by having a Christmas cookie baking session and then give the cookies to friends and family. Personal treats are a great, cost-effective gift. Think about the gift receiver and the things they enjoy and plan to do that activity with them throughout the year, not just during the holiday season.

Make the holiday season enjoyable by keeping your spending to a minimum and doing those things that make you happy.
