Combating Social Isolation with Animatronic Pets

Jen Ozolins Rice, Marketing & Outreach Coordinator, CareWell Services Southwest

To help combat loneliness and depression among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, we are working on a pilot program to distribute over 50 interactive robotic cats and dogs to those most at-risk for social isolation.  These pets allow older adults to receive similar gratification and comfort that they would from live pets by calming anxiety, decreasing loneliness, and providing a better quality of life – without needing to worry about food or vet bills.  The pets meow or bark, move in response to being touched, and are fluffy enough to be loved and snuggled.

It is well known that social isolation disproportionately affects older adults, many of whom often only have social contact out of the home at community venues or places of worship.  Those who do not have close family or friends and rely on the support of community services are at additional risk, along with those who are already lonely or isolated.

We all know this pandemic has impacted the entire aging network and we are working tirelessly to address ongoing concerns, including social isolation.  We are utilizing innovative ways to combat the public health emergency of social isolation and loneliness, and the robotic pet project has extensive evidence demonstrating overwhelming value to the older population.
If you feel that you or a loved one could benefit from an animatronic companion pet, please reach out to us at 269-441-0930, to receive additional information and an application form when they become available.  To view pictures and videos of the pets in action, visit www.joyforall.com.
