CareWell Promotes Independence Through Assistive Technology Program

CareWell Services Southwest has collaborated with Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (MDRC) to raise awareness on how Assistive Technology can foster independence. The collaborative effort is called the Michigan Assistive Technology Program (MATP).

CareWell works with MDRC to provide education about Assistive Technology and how it can support independence to individuals throughout Southwest Michigan in Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St, Joseph, and Van Buren counties. Educational opportunities include individual device demonstrations, training, and short-term device loans.

During individual device demonstrations, a specialist from CareWell will meet with an individual who needs assistance to maintain independence and demonstrate any devices that may help. This gives the individual a hands-on opportunity to try the devices to see what may work for his or her needs. Short-term loans are available to help individuals decide if a device is right for them. Most devices are low cost and low tech, but they can make a world of difference for individuals.

CareWell specialists also offer group training or presentations. These presentations are often done at events or agencies, such as senior centers or nursing facilities. CareWell offers training in various Assistive Technology topics such as cooking, safety in the home, or personal care. Presentations include suggestions for devices that may help in the specific area covered, as well as hands-on experiences with the suggested devices.

CareWell does not sell any devices. We are simply excited to share ideas with individuals who are striving to maintain their independence for as long as possible. Devices demonstrated can be purchased at many major shopping outlets and online.

There are many examples of simple devices that can assist with a variety of needs. There are special clocks for people with hearing loss. There are also talking clocks, watches, books, calculators, tire pressure gauges, and more for those with low vision.  For those who have lost feeling in their hands, there are tools to tell if water is hot or cold to avoid getting burned. There are tools to remind you to take your medication, or devices to assist with putting your socks on.

CareWell has devices to show for many situations and can help you find what may help you if your abilities are shifting. With the Michigan Assistive Technology Program, we are able to let you experience hands-on hope in independence and not hopelessness that is often felt by people as their abilities change. The program is open to people of all ages in our service area.
